“Fueling up” isn’t a new concept – we all have a metaphorical fuel tank of energy and we use it to do everything in our lives. Every tank has limits, and so we have to fuel up constantly. We eat enough calories to keep our bodies happy, we seek joy and love to refill our tanks, and we sleep every night to top it up for the next day.
How we spend our energetic fuel is driven mostly by our habits.
Just like putting a little energy every day into flossing gives you better teeth and healthier gums, the ways you divide up your attention through the day give you the results that you have in your life.
The issue is that most of us habitually siphon off the gas tank little by little over the course of our day, through bad mental and emotional habits – without even realizing it.
Every day, these little moments, these tiny imperceptible habits, build a world in which you cannot help but find yourself with nothing left in the tank at the end of the day.
What you need isn’t a 26-hour day or a vacation on the beach (although both would be nice) — you need to master how you use your energy.
Bad energy habits include:
taking on others’ emotions and baggage
scattering your attention
ignoring your body’s messages & your intuition
prioritizing other people over yourself
It isn’t your fault if you’ve developed these unhelpful habits – most of us have been trained into them since childhood by caregivers and a culture that didn’t know better. We have so few examples of good habits that we can all be forgiven for our ignorance here.

When I went to massage school over a decade ago (wow, I feel old), some of my teachers mentioned in passing (1) the high burnout rates among massage therapists, (2) that we had to protect our joints at all costs so they wouldn’t break, and (3) that sometimes people just burned out anyway, even if their joints were fine.
The average massage career at that time was only 5 years long, and most of the massage therapists leaving the profession left in their first year, citing the high emotional drain as one of their reasons.
YIKES.
So did they teach us how to prevent all that burnout that had nothing to do with the joints, and everything to do with the emotional and energetic components of the job?! Nope. Not at all. We each had to figure that one out on our own.
Or just…not.

About the Founder of Awakened Vitality
Slade Powell, LMT (he/they) is the creator of The Diamond Room newsletter (often referred to as “the only email I actually want to open”) and Awakened Vitality, a digital course in creating energetic boundaries for people in the helping and caring professions. He hosted The Diamond Room podcast for three seasons over two years; it is currently archived and available on Spotify and iTunes.
A professional massage therapist for over 10 years, Slade specializes in deep tissue myofascial work, migraine relief, injury treatment, and bindegewebsmassage. He is a master-level Reiki practitioner and teaches meditation with a rotating band of rogue meditators at Kaleidoscope Meditation Group in Seattle, WA, USA.
Slade taught himself energy work after a few years in massage practice, when he kept tripping over people’s chakras.
